It’s Never Too Late

We all have hopes and dreams. I have always wished that if I had one talent, it would be to be able to sing. m

Music is the heart of life. If you think about it-every important occasion is marked with song. The Wedding March as a bride walks down the aisle, Amazing Grace as we say goodbye at funerals, Pomp and Circumstance as we honor graduates.

Every show, every movie, every important moment in our lives has a theme song. I’m sure you still remember “your song” you had with your first love, your kid’s favorite lullaby and what your parents played on the 8-track in the car.

Frank Sinatra will always be middle of the night car rides down to Ocean City Maryland with one of my best friends, Nicole. Gypsy Kings will forever be my mom and everything Spain. Wonderful Tonight was my favorite in college and later what I would sing to my kids as they’d drift off to sleep.

it’s no wonder I love music so much. A song can remind you why you fell in love or bring you to your knees. And the amazing thing is that over the years, that can be the exact same song.

After all these years of not being able to sing well, I decided to try and change that. I have always heard that our voices are an instrument that anyone can learn to play.

So, I recently started taking lessons and I’m hopeful that with time and practice, I can be the songbird I’ve always wanted to be.

Years ago, when ‘Dear Abby’ had a column, this one really stuck with me.

I may have not been born with the voice of an angel, but one thing I’ve learned over the years, is that practice and perseverance trumps natural talent any day of the week.

Taking singing lessons is a gift to myself. One that if all goes well, will stay with me forever.

I hope if you have something you’ve always wanted to do, you too find the courage to take the next step to fulfilling your dream and believe George Eliot’s wise words, “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”
